Colocation web hosting is very different from every other hosting service, primarily because it is not a service in which web servers are leased. Instead, colocation hosting is a web server storage service in which adequate server storage space is provided in a state-of-the-art data center that is equipped with highly trained staff and maximum security 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
In essence, you are simply paying for storage space so that you can store your dedicated server without problems such as hardware damage and theft occurring. While this may seem as if it is a great service that everyone should use, only a small percentage of webmasters will ever need colocation hosting. If you are not sure whether or not your business needs access to a colocation hosting service then you may want to consider the following information.
Do You Own a Web Server?
If you do not own a web server then you should know that you will need to purchase one before a colocation hosting service will be of any use to you. Web servers can cost anywhere from $1500-$10,000, depending upon the model and its capabilities. If you can afford to invest that much money in to a web server, and you are ready to pay for the monthly cost of colocation hosting, then it may be within your budget ton purchase a colocation hosting plan. However, if you are like the majority of webmasters, then you will not be able to afford or justify such a purchase.
What Kind of Sites Do You Own?
If you own a single medium sized web site then you may not have a need for a dedicated server at all. Dedicated web servers are ideal for people that have dozens of web sites or a single corporate web site that needs to be maintained professionally and kept at peak performance. With the availability of cheap and powerful web hosting you should be able to find a plan that will accommodate your needs with ease. Dedicated servers and colocation hosting is only recommended for corporations and enterprises, or people that own hundreds of sites.
How Technically Skilled Are You?
As mentioned, a colocation hosting service is simply a web server storage service, which means that most colocation hosting plans do not come with technical support. As such, you will need to provide your own technical support for server maintenance and administration. Most administrative duties can be done remotely, however this requires an advanced level of knowledge in the way web servers work. If you do not have a decent amount of experience in dealing with web servers then you may want to consider a colocation hosting solution that includes technical support.
Unfortunately, in order to have full technical support included with your colocation hosting plan you will need to pay an extra fee each month. When you add this fee to the mountain of other expenses associated with colocation hosting, it becomes clear that this type of hosting solution should only be utilize by highly successful online businesses.
Hosting providers can quickly deploy and maintain 50+ applications for a low monthly fee through OnApp’s cloud hosting engine
London, 01 September: OnApp and JumpBox have announced a new deal for hosting providers that makes it significantly easier to deploy and maintain popular Open Source web applications on cloud servers, using commodity hardware.
For a low monthly fee, hosting companies can deploy the entire JumpBox library of ‘ready to use’ web applications in the cloud, using OnApp’s unique elastic cloud engine, while benefiting from easy upgrades to those applications from JumpBox. The result is significantly reduced cost, complexity and time to deployment for the applications that hosting providers’ customers want to use. The monthly fee includes unlimited user access per cloud.
“The combination of OnApp’s highly configurable cloud hosting engine, and JumpBox’s ‘ready to use’ web applications, makes it simple for hosting providers to deploy and manage the applications their customers need,” said Carlos Rego, MD of OnApp. “With more than 50 JumpBox applications available today, a low monthly fee, and OnApp’s unique approach to cloud hosting, our clients can expand the services they offer in a very quick and cost-effective way.”
“With the combination of JumpBox and OnApp, hosting providers now have a ready library of application solutions for their customers,” said Kimbro Staken, CEO of JumpBox “Adding these easy to deploy applications to a hosting service encourages increased usage by hosting customers and higher revenue for the hosting provider. Plus, since the library gains more applications over time, the provider’s revenue opportunity just continues to increase while the low monthly fee stays the same.”
OnApp’s elastic cloud engine enables hosting providers to set up and manage cloud and virtual servers on commodity hardware, extremely quickly, using virtual machine templates and a web-based user interface. JumpBox makes it simple to deploy and manage Open Source web applications by packaging each one as a ‘ready to use’ virtual machine.
With the library of JumpBox virtual machines available through OnApp, hosters and other service providers can quickly deploy, configure and manage cloud-based applications – from blogging and content management systems to wikis, bug trackers and e-commerce platforms – to meet the needs of their customers.
The OnApp cloud hosting engine is licensed to users on a cost per CPU core and cost per cloud basis, but is currently available with a full year’s free trial. See http://onapp.com/onapp-pricing/ for details.

Back in the Groove
Back from vacation and stumbling along as I get back into the groove. Not much to mention on the vacation front except for, I’m glad it’s over. As much as I enjoy stepping away from the day-to-day, I can’t wait to get back into it. Familiarity is a grand place to be. It’s great to be back to work, back with my favorite coffee, back to my comfy chair and back in my own bed! (Read More…)

Even more experienced and technical minded website masters will know the great value in this offer and will be lapping it up – if anything, only because of the price.
Patrick McCarthy, commercial director at UK2.net, went on to say: “We can never sit on our laurels in this industry. It’s clear that UK2 are getting all their ducks in a row and it’s very refreshing to hear a company putting their customers first. Whatever you think you have to agree that a web hosting package for 99p is absolute good & wholesome hosting pleasure.
Patrick concluded: “There are a large amount of people out there who have yet to take the plunge and start creating their own websites. They have the ideas, aspirations and goals. We have and can help with the know-how. We’ve now taken away the price element hurdle and it really should be free surfing from her on in.”

No matter what the type of platform you are running – speed matters if you want to compete. This is true even if you are running from an established content management system (CMS) such as WordPress. While the underlying CMS may be practically identical between various WordPress websites, there are a variety of factors that can substantially influence performance and speed.
Anyone who has ever waited for a website to load for more than a second or two can tell you about the benefits of a fast loading website. Here is another reason why speed is important – Google earlier this year specifically called out website speed as a critical factor in its search engine rankings on the Official Google blog. Here’s just a bit of what Google had to say on the subject: ”Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed – that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. We encourage you to start looking at your site’s speed – not only to improve your ranking in search engines, but also to improve everyone’s experience on the Internet.”
So just what kind of difference does your site speed have on your Google rankings or the number of visitors to your site? One analytics company recently conducted research specifically to see what impact site speed actually had on Google search rankings. The results? A faster website load time triggered the Googlebot to visit the site much more often. This corresponded to a 15 percent increase in website traffic over the same period. You can view the complete Google website speed analytics study results here.
You know that speed is important for your website, so what sorts of items can you address with your WordPress site to gain superior speed and get the edge on your search rankings? Here is a great list of items you should check into.
1. Upgrade to the latest version of WordPress -According to the WordPress download page, the latest stable version is WordPress Version 3.0.1. If you are already running the current version – then you’re good. If not, your web hosting company can advise you on the best way to upgrade. It is often the case that a hosting provider will either offer a ‘one-click’ install or upgrade – or will simply perform the upgrade for you upon request.
2. Investigate exactly what your current website speed is. There are a variety of ways to view how fast your WordPress website loads up. Here is one that is easy to use and free.
Alertra – Simply type your URL into the ‘Check URL’ box in the upper right hand corner of the Alertra website. Then press the ‘check’ button. Alertra then loads your website from a number of different worldwide locations. A recent test included checks from Frankfurt, London, Joplin, Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago, Shanghai and Sydney. The results also include a parameter marked ‘time’ which returns the load time of your website page down to hundredths of a second.
3. Streamline your code – There are a number of relatively easy and obvious ideas to reduce the size of the pages that your site needs to load. You can get started by reading up on Google’s own advice on making your website adhere to what they term ”Web Performance Best Practices”. This means your site will generally be groomed to best display quickly and in the manner that Google requires. Read the description and explore further links at the Web Performance Best Practices page.
4. Ensure that your web hosting company is a top performer. A critical component in the speed of your WordPress website is the performance of your web hosting provider. To ensure that you are using a truly world-class hosting provider you should perform a few checks.
Twitter – It is very easy to see what others think of any web hosting company by checking their comments on Twitter. Just navigate to twitter.com and search by company name.
Industry expert sources – Another great reality check on any reputable hosting provider is to search the industry expert websites. You can see expert opinions on The Hosting News and webhostingtalk.com. Both sites will give you insight into which providers are industry leaders and which aren’t.
Don’t forget to email in to your hosting provider and ask questions like: How do you ensure site speed for your clients? What type of server will I be on? (Look for quality hardware vendors and redundant connectivity) Can you help me make my website faster? Their willingness to answer and the completeness of the responses will speak volumes about how they view accommodating the speedy function of your WordPress site.
Finally, if you simply have a massive site or need to keep complex features in place, consider moving your website to a higher end service – like a virtual server or a dedicated server. While these web hosting products may cost more on a monthly basis, you often find that the increased speed and stability of the server justifies additional outlay.
