(The Hosting News)  –  Web hosting provider ServInt, today announced it is donating hosting services for the new philanthropic effort Indie Music for Haiti (www.indiemusicforhaiti.com).

The new site from Maryland-based music studio Asparagus Media allows independent musicians to submit video clips of recent performances, new songs written for or about the crisis, and other video content designed to promote charitable giving to Haitian relief. The site is structured to make submitting content simple, and allows artists to easily direct viewers to the charity of their choice.

To mark the launch of the site, ServInt was a major supporter of the successful Indie Music for Haiti fundraising concert Feb. 2nd at the popular Washington, DC music venue DC9. The event, which featured performances by artists including Tommy T of Gogol Bordello, raised several thousand dollars for the relief group Voice of Haiti (www.voiceofhaiti.org). One of the highlights of the event was an appearance by ServInt CEO and Founder Reed Caldwell, who flew in from ServInt’s Los Angeles office to announce that ServInt would match all donations made at the event.

All the performances from the Feb. 2nd event were filmed in high definition, and are among the first clips anchoring the content at Indie Music for Haiti.

“A huge part of the worldwide music industry isn’t affiliated with any mainstream music label. We’re giving these kinds of artists and their fans a place to congregate and make a positive difference for a devastated nation,” said Asparagus Media President Fritz Stolzenbach.

ServInt Chief Operating Officer Christian Dawson said, “With the potential to showcase hundreds of high-quality music-video files, Indie Music for Haiti will require a large amount of bandwidth and continuous monitoring to ensure reliable performance. ServInt will deploy all necessary hosting resources to guarantee an optimal user experience and give thousands of music fans the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing relief effort in Haiti.”

Dawson added, “ServInt has a long, successful association with some of the nation’s most progressive technology, music, art and literary communities. We expect to make additional announcements later this year, detailing our support for selected organizations that are helping to drive the economy, enlighten the general public and provide assistance to those in need.”

(The Hosting News) – Chicago based Steadfast Networks, has officially announced its environmental green initiative by implementing a 100% carbon offset. This offset will be utilized for staff commuting, office usage, core infrastructure, networking equipment, shared web hosting, VPS hosting, and backup services. Steadfast Networks is certified “carbon neutral” by Carbonfund.org, an environmentally-friendly organization that helps businesses reduce and offset their climate impact.

“Moving steadily forward in the 21st century does not mean trampling all over our natural resources, so we have teamed up with Carbonfund.org and implemented a variety of green initiative programs to help preserve our natural resources,” says Karl Zimmerman, CEO of Steadfast Networks. “The same high quality and exceptional service Steadfast Networks stands for in our managed servers, colocation hosting services, and web hosting services is the standard we aspire to for maintaining a healthy environment.”

In addition to becoming carbon neutral and purchasing carbon offsets, Steadfast Networks encourages employees to commute by foot, bike, or public transportation, and in some cases, work from home. To increase efficiency and help the environment, local vendors such as Amadi Systems provide more than 90% of Steadfast Networks’ equipment, cutting down on the emissions caused while transporting. Steadfast Networks orders the equipment with no packing materials in order to reduce the trash produced. All paper and cardboard products, equipment, hardware, and servers building-wide are recycled.

“Not having to unpack equipment has increased the speed of operations and made our Chicago hosting services and data centers run more efficiently,” says Zimmerman. “Highly efficient network systems and dedicated server hosting also reduce carbon outputs, and those are options we also offer to customers who want to reduce their carbon imprint.”

Steadfast Network’s base operations, shared web hosting, VPS hosting, and backup services are carbon neutral. Customers who wish to receive carbon neutral colocation services and dedicated server hosting indicate that choice by contacting a Steadfast Networks representative or when placing an order. Additionally, Steadfast Networks’ low power Atom servers, Xeon processors and Intel solid state drives lower operational costs while reducing the carbon footprint associated with hosting services. Providing dedicated server, colocation, and hosting services without up-selling a more energy-intensive IT solution a customer does not need further reduces
environmental impact.

“People who are passionate about caring for our world are loyal to companies who share that same sense of responsibility,” says Zimmerman. “Customers appreciate transparency and businesses with carbon neutral hosting services can let their clients know they are standing up and doing their part for our world.”

Plesk is one of the most widely used control panels currently available, and along with cPanel is a contender for the best control panel on the market. As Plesk also provides cost efficiency benefits to hosting providers, it is being offered increasingly as a default control panel solution by many web hosting services.  Unlike it’s top competitor cPanel, Plesk is completely compatible with both the Windows and Linux operating systems, broadening the spectrum of what control panels are capable of in terms of compatibility.  Aside from being compatible with the two major operating systems, Plesk is also suitable for virtually any type of server environment, including dedicated, shared and virtual private hosting services.

Plesk and Shared Hosting

Due to it’s multi-level user interface, Plesk is a suitable administrative tool for shared hosting users.   Plesk simplifies the task of managing multiple domains through a fully customizable interface specially designed for detailed hosting tasks. Even novice users with no technical training have the ability to  manage and create user accounts on their server.  Plesk also allows webmasters to manage their  domains without needing the support of a server administrator, ultimately saving support costs for the web hosting provider. Plesk’s simplicity and power offers benefits to both the end user and the web hosting provider, providing administrative tools for small and complex tasks alike.

Plesk and VPS Hosting

Plesk is also being used increasingly in the virtual private server environment, due to it’s compact size combined with it’s comprehensive functionality and efficacy. One of the most beneficial features of Plesk for the virtual server user is that it can be used with a third-party software called Virtuozzo.  Virtuozzo lets administrators make use of the templates and interfaces of several control panel’s simultaneously, giving Plesk users the ability to benefit from other control panel features outside of the Plesk software. This software combination is a priceless advantage on a virtual platform such as VPS. Using Plesk with Virtuozzo has been proven to increase the investment returns of web hosting service providers while also accommodating the needs of the end user.

Plesk and Dedicated Hosting

Plesk’s modular design and RPM installation gives dedicated hosting providers the ability to offer an effective administrative tool to the more technical savvy group as well. Plesk is also a very expandable software that can be modified using various third-party applications, making it perfect for users with plenty of dedicated server space and innovation. Webmasters have access to a particularly interesting  feature known as XML-API, an integrated interface that fully automates the overseeing process, while also facilitating the use of the various third-party applications. Integrated software development kits such as XML-API and other back-end utilities gives end-users and hosting providers the ability to  enhance their products and services using Plesk.

Whether you have a dedicated or shared server, Plesk offers advantageous features that can greatly increase the productivity of your online business. The compatibility of Plesk with multiple operating systems and server environments has made it a top contender for the best control panel available.

(The Hosting News)- HostGator.com has formally announced on Monday that it had renewed its commitment to providing its customers with sustainable and environmentally friendly web hosting services.

Last week, the company renewed its agreement with 3Degrees, one of the nation’s leading renewable energy sales, trading and advisory firms, to purchase Renewal Energy Certificates (RECs) for 130% of the electricity used to power and cool HostGator’s more than 1,800 shared and reseller servers.

“It takes a lot of electricity to keep servers online and working well. That results in a bigger environmental impact than we’d like to see. As a result, we’re going to continue doing what we can to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions and help the environment,” said Brent Oxley, founder and CEO of HostGator.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a REC represents the property rights to the environmental, social, and other nonpower qualities of renewable electricity generation.  A REC purchased by HostGator represents one megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generated and delivered to the power grid. This energy will displace the generation of conventional electricity throughout the power system and reduce emissions into the atmosphere. The certificates HostGator purchases are for wind farms in the state of Texas.

Through its purchase of RECs, HostGator prevented close to 3,600 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere in 2009. This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions generated by burning 18 railcars full of coal, or the annual CO2 emissions of 650 passenger cars. Electricity production remains the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.

HostGator purchases credits for 130% of the electricity used to power and cool the company’s servers to work towards reversing, instead of simply neutralizing, its environmental impact. Through this effort, HostGator is actively working to lower pollution, mitigate climate change, and encourage the development of our national renewable energy resources.
