(The Hosting News) — SoftLayer Technologies®, has finished it’s SAS 70 Type II audit for a second year. The audit, which was overseen by an independent auditing agency and included extensive testing, was performed over a 12-month period. It involved all existing SoftLayer data center facilities in Dallas, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
SoftLayer’s SAS 70 data centers must maintain prescribed levels of data security and redundancy, as well as personnel controls. Specific procedures for accessing servers or data must be followed by data center staff in order; all systems access and activity must be logged, and all physical access must be highly controlled.
“A SAS 70 Type II review is an in-depth survey of a service organization’s control objectives and activities,” said Steve Kinman, Customer Service Manager for SoftLayer. “With an objective evaluation of our organization’s effectiveness in meeting our control objectives, we can continue to assure our customers the highest levels of security and reliability. It is an important step for any service organization supporting outsourced, mission-critical, and information technology services.”
The survey includes a full assessment of:
- Executive management oversight
- Operations and customer service
- Development and information technology organization
- Human resources policies and procedures
- Risk assessment monitoring
In addition, SoftLayer is in the process of achieving Payment Card Industry (PCI) Level 1 certification, with expected completion by midyear. PCI compliance helps to ensure the security of credit card data transmitted online. Level 1 is the highest level of compliance, necessary for merchants processing large quantities of online credit transactions.

San Francisco, California – (The Hosting News) – September 23, 2009 - Web hosting sponsors have been confirmed for commercial Hadoop company, Cloudera, for the inaugural Hadoop World conference, which will take place Friday, October 2 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City.
The 12 confirmed sponsors for Hadoop World: NYC 2009 are Facebook, Rackspace, Yahoo!, Intel, IBM, Amazon.com, Supermicro, Softlayer, and eHarmony. Confirmed media sponsors include GigaOm, High Scalability, ReadWriteWeb and The Register.
Christophe Bisciglia, founder of Cloudera remarked, ”To have such a large number of industry leaders sponsor a first-time event speaks volumes about the importance of Hadoop and its future. As traditional enterprises around the world are turning to Hadoop to solve data-intensive computing challenges, Hadoop World will provide compelling use cases along with the introduction and instruction needed for enterprise users to get started.”
At Hadoop World, more than 30 of the world’s most experienced Apache Hadoop practitioners — including project creator Doug Cutting — will gather to discuss Hadoop-related best practices and use cases.
Eric Baldeschwieler, Vice President, Hadoop Software Development, Yahoo! explained, ”Yahoo! is the largest supporter and contributor to the Hadoop project, and we run the largest Hadoop installations in the world to support complex data analysis and mining, display advertising, our content platforms, personalization, filtering email spam, research, and more. We are excited about the growth we’re seeing in the Hadoop ecosystem, including more uses of Hadoop for mission critical activity across the industry. At Hadoop World, we look forward to discussing the exciting prospects and challenges for continuing to make Hadoop faster, more scalable, more reliable and more secure.”
Rod Smith, vp of Emerging Technologies, IBM Software Group noted, ”We see that applications based on Hadoop have the potential to revolutionize business analytics in the same way PC spreadsheets did in the 80s. Using Hadoop to tap the power of ‘Big Data’ sets the stage for a new class of Web applications– enabling more business professionals across industries to gain insight from today’s massive amount of information.”
John Engates, CTO at Rackspace noted, ”At Rackspace, we generate terabytes upon terabytes of log files and event level data operating our cloud services. Hadoop has proven to be a scalable and reliable system for storing and processing our ever increasing volumes of data, and we’re excited to share details with the community at Hadoop World: NYC 2009.”
Nathan Day, CTO, Softlayer noted, ”We see a lot of our customers taking advantage of Softlayer’s bare metal cloud offering to achieve better performance for Hadoop. It’s exciting to see how many companies are turning to Hadoop and we’re pleased to be a part of this growing community.”

Plano, Texas – (The Hosting News) – July 15, 2009 – Dedicated server solution provider, SoftLayer, recently supported the live Internet broadcast of the Michael Jackson Memorial Service, as an on-demand data center services provider, selected by multi-platform IP services and content delivery provider, Highwinds.
As a trusted partner to support high-quality live streaming of the global event, it is believed that the memorial service’s viewership was second only to the inauguration of President Barack Obama, also streamed by SoftLayer and Highwinds.
Ric Moseley, Vice President of Engineering at SoftLayer noted, ”It would be enough of an accomplishment just to handle an event of this scale. But being able to handle it without any interruption to regular operations really proves the robustness of our architecture and network. We are proud to have been a part of such a historic occasion, and that customers like Highwinds keep coming back to us for our expertise.”
SoftLayer provisioned more than 400 servers for the one-day netcast, demonstrating the service providers’ massive and dynamic scalability. SoftLayer streamed more than 45Gb of event coverage for the day, leading to a one-day high of 100Gb total traffic between its three data centers, with no reported outages or performance issues.
More and more people are turning to the Internet instead of television as their video source for important live events. After media and social networking sites experienced outages and overloading on the day of Jackson’s passing, it was expected his memorial service would generate record levels of attention.
George Antoniou, Vice President of Operations at Highwinds explained, ”We knew from our mutual success streaming the Obama Inauguration that SoftLayer was the ideal partner for this event.”
Headquartered in Plano, Texas, SoftLayer delivers world-class, on-demand virtual data center services on a global basis from facilities located in Dallas, TX; Seattle, WA; and Washington, DC. SoftLayer integrates all facets of IT to innovate industry-leading solutions that are fully automated. This empowers customers with complete control, security, scalability, and ease-of-management for their IT environment.
