NEW YORK (December 1, 2009) – HostV, a leader in managed Virtual Private Servers and
Dedicated servers, today introduced its exclusive Server Snapshot enterprise data backup solution, powered by R1Soft’s Continuous Data Protection technology. HostV will provide the solution to all new and existing customers at no additional charge.
Server Snapshot automatically backs up each hosting account (including databases and files in the account’s root directory) once daily. The backups are then compressed, encrypted and stored securely in physically separate backup storage servers. Clients can simply contact HostV’s support department to request data from a backup to be restored in case of data loss or emergencies.
“Although we have always provided our customers with integrated data backup, today’s introduction of Server Snapshot, powered by R1Soft, represents a major step forward in providing a more advanced, capable, and versatile solution. We have made a significant financial investment in acquiring and implementing this technology, and believe it will add significant value to our line of hosting services,” said John Xie, president of Cirtex Corp., HostV parent company.
Before Thanksgiving, HostV doubled both disk space and backup space for without raising prices. SiteSnapshot will provide data backup for the entire disk space allotment for each customer. Each Virtual Private Server (VPS) from HostV also includes RAID-10-based data backup, which physically mirrors data stored within the same server. Server Snapshot provides an additional layer of protection. VPS Hosting from HostV starts at $39.99/monthly for 50GB of disk space and 1000GB of toptier data transfer. All accounts include full support for video hosting, data backups, and HostV’s premium customer support.
Starting at just $149.99 per month for 300GB of RAID-10 protected disk space and 5000GB of monthly data transfer, HostV’s Hybrid Servers include 24/7 premium technical support and access to data backup space that offers a full mirror of each plan’s disk space allotment. All Hybrid Servers are based on Linux and offer pre-installed server management software, including Parallels Virtuozzo Power Panel, cPanel and Fantastico. Clients also receive SSH root access to their servers.

Having a dedicated server is one of the true signs that you have made it as a small to medium sized business owner. Unfortunately, it also makes you a likely target of hacking and other security threats. Securing any machine equipped with a web or application server is a huge challenge, one you may not be able to overcome alone. You need to worry about everything from your email and FTP communications to OS and kernel patches. And let’s not forget about those web technologies that can bring you so much functionality along with a lot of grief when not properly secured. This web-based world we live in can be very hazardous to any business so if you want to protect your server, we suggest paying close attention to the contents of this article.
Must-Have Defenses
Securing a dedicated server begins with creating a two-layer bullet proof vest to deflect the attempts of the enemy. Two of the most effective weapons to carry into battle: firewall and intrusion protection technology. With a firewall, your server will be able to fight off common exploits such as DDoS (distributed denial of service) and brute force attacks. Usually originating from multiple unsecured, enslaved machines, the dreaded DDoS attack will slam your dedicated server with awful amounts of insignificant traffic, overwhelming critical resources and rendering the hardware inaccessible to legitimate users. A quality firewall with good configurations will enforce rules that filters access and blocks malicious traffic while allowing legitimate traffic to pass. This is all done in a way that reduces latency and slow moving processes, so it all appears transparent to the end-user.
Though similar in a nature, intrusion detection and prevention takes a more advanced approach towards server security. This technology blocks malicious traffic right at the source, locking compromised hosts in a quarantine area all while routing genuine user traffic in a quick and efficient manner. If a firewall represents your first line of defense, then intrusion protection serves as your behind enemy lines mechanism. This powerful combination allows you to shift security measures from a reactive to proactive aspect.
Don’t Stop There
While the implementation of firewalls and intrusion protection make good first steps, one should keep in might that this isn’t the set it and forget it type of deal. In order to stay ahead of the hackers, malware coders and corporate saboteurs you must consistently employ vigilance as well as frequent updates of your patches, blacklists, filters and other vital elements. Purchasing and installing a few security devices and applications can be viewed as the easy part. Managing them with efficiency is an entirely different story.
Because properly securing a dedicated server is cost prohibitive for most small and medium sized organizations, you may want to consider a managed service to help keep the intruders away. Managed hosting is the often overlooked aspect of a dedicated server that could spell the difference between running a successful business, or going down because of a major security breach. If you are not sure where you stand on server security, consult your IT team or speak with a professional firm for guidance.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – (The Hosting News) – May 29, 2009 – Drift2 Web Services, Inc. has deployed R1Soft Continuous Data Protection technology and will offer automatic data backup for all shared and reseller hosting customers at no additional charge.
Greg Pruitt, CEO of Drift2 Web Services, Inc. remarked, ”R1Soft offers a strong solution that meets our needs and enables us to deliver a backup service without charging our clients a penny more. It’s easy to use, fast, and very scalable. As a web hosting provider entrusted with massive amounts of customer data, we feel confident with this in our toolbox.”
Customer data will be protected through two separate data backup processes. Hourly backups, retained for 24 hours, will protect databases against data loss or corruption. Drift2 will also run daily backups, retained for 14 days, to protect against catastrophic data loss disasters. Drift2 will fully-manage the new backups.
Unlike other backup technologies, R1Soft’s CDP stores only incremental changes in data sectors in each new restore point. This enables Drift2 to increase backup frequency and retain restore points for longer periods of time, while still minimizing cost. In comparison, Drift2 was only able to store data backups for about a day before adopting R1Soft CDP.
Shared web hosting plans from Drift2 start at just $4.95 per month for personal hosting and range to $49.95 per month for corporate hosting packages.
Since April 2003, Drift2 has provided award-winning shared and reseller hosting services to businesses and individuals in the United States and abroad. It currently supports the Linux platform and operates an H-Sphere powered cluster.
