(The Hosting News) — Consonus recently announced the completion of a new, energy-efficient evaporative cooling tower at the company’s West Data Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The project, prompted by growth in power demand at the facility, was a strategic choice — a conscious decision to invest in new, environmental-friendly technology that supports Consonus’ green initiatives.
“It came down to this — upgrade with more of the same technology or research and invest in new, energy-efficient technology that not only benefits our customer, but the environment as well,” explains Consonus Chief Information Officer Brent Wall.
The elimination of inefficient dry coolers and the humidification process greatly reduces the carbon footprint of the data center. Consonus has seen an immediate and significant reduction in electrical usage. Additionally, the implementation of this new technology furthers plans to achieve an energy performance rating that puts the Consonus West Data Center in the top 25% among data center peers.
“The cooling tower is part of an overall energy efficiency initiative underway at all of our data centers,” said Regional Data Center Manager Jason Sampson. “We’re excited to have this project completed and are already seeing the benefits of it.”
Completed in only five months and with an investment of over half a million dollars, the addition of the cooling tower illustrates Consonus’ commitment to maintain world-class data centers by reinvesting in the business. “This investment strengthens our operational resiliency, reduces cost and is good for the environment.” says Wall. “There is a clear and compelling business case for going green.”
The cooling tower works by recycling water in the data center air handling units used to absorb the heat created by IT equipment. When the warmed water returns to the top of the tower, the evaporation process naturally draws the heat out of the water, returning the temperature to an appropriate, cooler level.

(The Hosting News) - ServInt, a pioneering provider of managed web hosting for businesses worldwide, today announced its Chief Operating Officer Christian Dawson will be a featured speaker at HostingCon 2010 in Austin, Texas July 19th at 10 a.m. Dawson’s session will examine how virtualization and superior customer service will shape the future of the global hosting industry.
“Savvy technology integration and a commitment to long-term customer relationships will be the keys to prosperity in our industry,” Dawson said. “As one of the world’s most prominent web hosts since 1995, we are the first to notice the extent to which customer demands are changing. Mega-hosts too often try to meet bandwidth demands through technology and price alone, without adequately focusing on two-way, long-term customer relationships.”
Dawson’s presentation will outline how progressive web hosts can use virtualization and personal, customer-oriented hosting services to gain market share and ensure long-term growth.
“As the market evolves, small-scale innovation will be rewarded. The most innovative hosts will combine the latest VPS solutions with a willingness to tackle harder problems on a more personal basis. At the same time, effective VPS solutions will provide critical power to large-scale sites, while maximizing scalability, boosting energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.”

Chicago, IL (PRESS RELEASE) June 10, 2010 – Steadfast Networks, a leading Chicago based data center and dedicated server hosting provider, announced today its acquisition of VPSSpeed, a VPS hosting company with a significant track record in providing superior customer service. Acquisition of VPSSpeed allows Steadfast Networks to continue its growth in the VPS hosting market.
“VPSSpeed has a proven track record of providing excellent customer service and innovative VPS hosting and dedicated server hosting services to customers around the world,” says Karl Zimmerman, CEO of Steadfast Networks. “VPSSpeed was one of the first VPS providers to offer 100Mbit/s unmetered VPS hosting along with free Installatron and a custom VPS hosting control panel.”
VPSSpeed customers will continue to receive the high level of service they have been accustomed to at VPSSpeed. All accounts will be hosted on high end servers with RAID arrays in one of Steadfast Network’s fully redundant, self-managed network and data centers. Customer accounts will be hosted on the same OpenVZ, an open-source, container-based virtualization platform for Linux. And all applications will still work the same way.
“The only difference from this point forward is all VPSSpeed customers will be hosted on Steadfast Networks infrastructure as we will be offering VPSSpeed services out of our Chicago, IL and Manhattan, NY data centers,” said Zimmerman. “VPSSpeed customers will have direct access to a team of VPS hosting solutions experts in our fully redundant data centers 24-7-365.”
VPSSpeed shares Steadfast Networks’ commitment to energy efficiency. By consuming less power with low-energy processors and components, VPSSpeed and Steadfast Networks run highly efficient data centers with lower operating costs. The lower operational costs is one reason Steadfast Networks offers more competitive pricing for its VPS hosting plans and dedicated server hosting plans.
“VPS hosting and dedicated server hosting performance rely on quality IT infrastructure and expert IT support and staff, and VPSSpeed shares our commitment to creating an ideal data transfer environment for our customers,” said Zimmerman. “At Steadfast Networks we are pleased to welcome VPSSpeed to our team and offer reliable VPS hosting and dedicated server hosting.”
Steadfast Networks operates its own redundant network and data centers in Chicago and New York with 24-7-365 on-site staff. Because of this existing infrastructure, customer accounts will be migrated to Steadfast Networks Chicago and New York data centers. Customers based in Dallas will be moved to Chicago, while customers in Pennsylvania will be moved to New York. Steadfast Networks will begin migrating VPSSpeed customers in June. (The Hosting News) - ServInt, a pioneering provider of managed web hosting for businesses worldwide, celebrates its 15th anniversary this month. Since its founding in 1995 as one of the world’s original providers of enterprise managed hosting, ServInt has achieved 15 years of growth as a company. During that period, thousands of web-hosting providers have come and gone.
ServInt Founder and Chief Executive Officer Reed Caldwell said ServInt has built a loyal, global customer base by continually introducing innovative, scalable hosting solutions to solve the most complex technological challenges of web-based businesses. Those innovations include industry-leading Virtual Private Server (VPS) and Managed Dedicated Server solutions.
“We’ve been able to prosper for 15 years, which is much longer than most companies in our industry,” Caldwell said. “We have established our impressive track record by maintaining consistently high levels of customer satisfaction. We earn customer loyalty by addressing evolving client needs, and by providing personal support from a Managed Services Team of experienced professionals.”
ServInt’s Commitment to Climate-Positive Hosting
ServInt’s focus on innovation, longevity and sustainability is also reflected in its ongoing commitment to climate-positive hosting. Since 2008, ServInt’s Green Initiative has deployed multiple green methodologies to help customers operate with minimal environmental impact.
Through use of its efficient virtualization and cloud technologies – integrated with Parallels Virtuozzo Containers – ServInt’s hosting solutions feature optimally low per-capita energy consumption. ServInt solutions achieve this industry-leading energy efficiency while making exclusive use of Dell low-wattage server hardware, which provides high-performance while operating with a much smaller carbon footprint.
A recent Parallels study noted that ServInt’s virtualized servers require only 15 percent of the power footprint of a traditional server farm that is not optimized with virtualization and low-wattage technologies.
By implementing efficient technologies and participating in a large-scale reforestation campaign operated by American Forests, ServInt has offset the total carbon footprint of its entire line of VPS hosting solutions by at least 110 percent in each of the past two years. In 2010, ServInt is increasing its commitment to environmental sustainability by offsetting the carbon footprint of its standard product line, as well as its entire cloud infrastructure.
ServInt Chief Operating Officer Christian Dawson said, “The successful ongoing implementation of our Green Initiative has resulted in greater company-wide energy efficiency. By expanding this commitment, and exploring new ways to decrease waste and increase efficiency, we will continue to help our customers operate with minimal environmental impact.”
